Grandma's Cobwebs
By: Ann Frantti
Young Claire realizes that Grandma, who was the best grandmother in the world before she developed Alzheimer's, is still the best grandmother in the world. Whether read with the child or by the child alone, this book helps young children understand the emotional aspects of Alzheimer's disease. (Ages: 4 to 8)
Author Ann Frantti was 48 when her mother passed away from Alzheimer's in 1994. She always wanted to be like her mother, but didn't understand what was happening. Frantti recalls, "I didn't catch on for a long time that she had Alzheimer's because it is a disease that doesn't change people on the outside, but on the inside."
Frantti, who is also the principal at Orneda Elementary School in upstate New York, says, "Children are the forgotten victims of Alzheimer's and they need to be included in family discussions to help them know and understand what is going on with grandma or grandpa."
Grandma's Cobwebs is written from the viewpoint of a young girl named Claire who is forced to deal with the disease when her grandmother comes to live with her and her family. It depicts simple, relatable experiences that a young child understandably goes through when dealing with mysteries of this disease, as well as what Frantti calls the "Three R's": Relax, Remember and Respect.
