Tasting Notes:
The 2005 Pinot Gris displays aromas of citrus, pear, and orange blossoms, accented by hints of brown spice. The flavor profile is lively with flavors of lemon-lime and hints of orange zest.
Winemaker Notes:
Byron Pinot Gris is handcrafted using the gentlest winemaking techniques possible in our multi-level, gravity-flow winery. The wine was 100% barrel fermented with malolactic fermentation. During this time, the barrels were hand-stirred once a week to enhance texture, complexity, and longevity.
Vintage Character:
The 2005 vintage was a mild year in the Santa Maria Valley. Bud break began toward the end of February, which is very normal for the valley. Early spring was wet, and late spring was very sunny, dry, and mild. These conditions led to very good vine growth and a good set. The dry conditions in late spring encouraged small berries, even though the cluster weights were above average. Harvest conditions were very moderate to cool. The cool temperatures encouraged flavor development without dramatic increases in sugar. The resulting wines are very complex with good depth and color.
