Tasting Notes:
The 2005 Pinot Noir displays vivid aromas of rose petal, violets, and red plum accented by hints of perfume and brown spice.
The flavor profile has a core of dark cherry with hints of earth and forest floor, backed by a smoky-toast finish.
Acclaim:
88 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, November 2007
Winemaker Notes:
Bien Nacido Vineyard Pinot Noir was given the gentlest handling possible at our gravity-flow winery. Clusters were carefully
hand-sorted on the upper level before passing through the crusher-stemmer into movable open-top fermenters below. There, the
grapes received three to five days of cold pre-fermentation maceration to develop fruit character, color, and body. When the wine
began fermentation, a combination of punch-downs and pump-overs was used to circulate the skins and juice. During the four
most active days of fermentation, the cellar team performed “rack and return” on each tank once a day for additional extraction
and concentration. The wine aged in French oak and was cellared in our temperature- and humidity-controlled barrel rooms.
Vintage Character:
The 2005 vintage was a mild year in the Santa Maria Valley. Bud break began toward the end of February, which is very normal
for the valley. Early spring was wet, and late spring was very sunny, dry, and mild. These conditions led to very good vine growth
and a good set. The dry conditions in late spring encouraged small berries, even though the cluster weights were above average.
Harvest conditions were very moderate to cool. The cool temperatures encouraged flavor development without dramatic
increases in sugar. The resulting wines are very complex with good depth and color..
