Tasting Notes:
A classic Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir, the 2002 Pinot Noir Sierra Madre is silky and opulent, reflecting qualities of this old vine estate. Fragrant aromas of black cherry, currents and rose petals are highlighted by hints of spice and fresh tobacco. The flavors are vibrant and well focused with Bing cherry, clove, earth and toasty oak. A superb balance of the wine's richness, tannin structure and natural acidity creates a seamless flow from beginning to end.
Winemaker Notes:
As one of California's coolest vineyards, Sierra Madre Vineyard routinely experiences an exceptionally long growing season and this year was no exception. An unseasonably cool spring followed by below normal summer temperatures made for an exceptionally long, cool growing season, positioning 2002 as the second coolest vintage on record in Santa Maria Valley. Yields were light - 25 to 50 percent below normal - and berries were among the smallest we have seen to date. Pinot Noir from the cool Sierra Madre Vineyard was harvested in early October.
Vintage Character:
Poor fruit set in some blocks contributed to a small crop, but the shatter opened up the clusters, minimizing pressure for mildew and botrytis and promoted outstanding expression and intensity in the fruit.
