Just south of the equator, Papua New Guinea offers all the prerequisites for great coffee: tropical climate, elevations of 4,000 to 8,000 feet and rich volcanic soil. Well, Papua New Guinea more than delivers on the promise.
The first of many thing you'll notice about PNG is the beauty of the bean itself. Large, perfectly shaped with little or no defects, PNG testifies to a meticulous selection process and betrays its noble ancestral origins: much of todays trees are direct descendants of arabica trees transplanted in the 1930's from the Jamaican Blue Mountains (and to find out where those trees come from, see our Jamaican Blue Mountain offering). This is why PNG does not bear much similiarity with Sumatran, it's geographical neighbor, but has much more in common with the best Central American coffees: good acidity, clean finish and a mellow chocolatey flavor enhanced by a subtle fruitiness.
