Slightly fewer than 1,000 cases of this 1983 Vintage Port were produced and only about 700 cases were released in November of 1991. Each of the four Portuguese grape varietals selected contribute a spectrum of flavors that complement each other and build a unique structure. Souzao (42%) is aromatic, full in flavor and rich with deep, resplendent color. Tinta Madeira (35%) has a rich chocolate flavor with hints of raspberry and spice. Touriga (19%) is noted for its concentrated fruit flavor and distinctive aroma. The Tinta Cao (4%) provides a soft and subtle flavor with delicate overtones. This vintage port was bottled in May, 1987

Bottled in Aprilof 1999, it now has a full 13 years of bottle age. Thattraditional bottle age softens the youthful, dark flavors andbegins to give focus to the direction those flavors will go. While building in the mouth an incredible complexity and marriageof the dark fruit, notes of some cedar, hints of menthol, itcarries a lingering pleasant and balanced finish. Theenjoyment of such a wine lays in the subtleties of the layersleather, earth and fruit unfold in the glass before you. While it will require decanting prior to serving, it may bebeginning to form a bit of a crust in the bottle. Enjoyablenow, this wine will continue to soften with additional age – easilyfor the next 10 to 25 years. The 1996 harvest was slightlyearly, and the winelots used in blending thisVintagePortwere picked mid-to late August. 42% Tinta Maderia, 40% Touriga, 16% Souzao,and 2% Tinta Cao.

In the fall of 1957, selected clusters of Tinta Madeira grapes were carefully hand-picked in our estate vineyards. At the winery these grapes, which showed early promise for an outstanding vintage, were crushed and fermented by winery founder and winemaker David Ficklin using time honored traditional Portuguese methods. The character and fullness are enhanced by the exclusive use of a special pot-still brandy, made entirely from the same Tinta Madeira grapes. First bottled February 26th and 27th in 1960, only 5226 bottles were laid down in the winery cellars. This Port was first released November 1968. This second and final release of 100 cases has been aged under controlled conditions at the winery for 40-plus years. Re-corked in 1991, this 1957 Vintage Port shows splendid maturity and graceful elegance. Only a few precious bottles of this wine are in the winery library.

1986 Vintage Port: Selected lots of the traditional Portuguesegrape varietals, Tinta Madeira (40%), Souzao (37%), Touriga (12%),and Tinta Cao (2%), were blended and set aside to mature in thecellar. Bottled in June of 1988, 1988 Vintage: Features theexuberant fruit of the Tinta Madeira grape, which composes 70% ofthe blend. Smaller quantities of Touriga (17%), Souzao (12%) andTinta Cao (1%) were added to build the wine’s structure and enhanceits full array of flavors. The 1988 Vintage shows a lush array ofplum and dark cherry. 1996 Vintage: This wine shows a lush array ofcherry, tobacco, and leather and is beginning to develop the subtlesoftness and character associated with bottle aged Vinatge Ports.
