The Story:
“Miser” was conceived as a traditional Bordeaux
blend, a more serious and thoughtful cousin to our
popular and muscular California Cabernet
Sauvignon. Here we sought a satisfying depth of
flavor by marrying the firm tannins and forward
fruit of Gary Mangels’ superb Suisun Valley Cab
Sauv with the chocolate undertones of Lange
Vineyard and the spicy, minerally Haynes Valley
component, then framing the lush richness of the
resulting Cabernet Sauvignon blend with the
energetic drive and refinement of Cabernet Franc
from the Lodi appellation. This Cabernet Franc
also imparts intriguing notes of tobacco and
tarragon to the nose and a lingering finish
reminiscent of fine Graves, so we elected to utilize
a substantial portion. It’s also cheaper!
The predominate Cabernet Sauvignon which
provides such rich structural fatness lies
geographically in the Napa River watershed, but
was deprived through political maneuvering of its
Napa Valley appellation rights some three decades
ago by virtue of its location outside Napa County.
This was a disaster for poor Gary Mangels, who can
only now command Lodi prices, but a boon for
discerning CheapSkates.
We are enrolled in the Meritage Society, its
lowest priced member and proud of it. This is
CheapSkate’s answer to Opus One, and by gum,
our bottle is worth more than their thimble-full!
Miser is the standard bearer for the
CheapSkate philosophy (see back label). We firmly
believe that American wine lovers can discover high
quality absent overpricing. We acknowledge our
French guru Patrick Ducournau for his suite of
élevage techniques which we have incorporated
into a winemaking philosophy we call GrapeCraft.
