A Varozza Winery History:
Giovanni “James” Varozza brought his wife and family to St. Helena in 1870 and leased a vineyard at the top of Spring Mountain. His son Joseph then purchased the twenty seven-acre vineyard and winery on Hudson (now Pratt Avenue) in
St. Helena. Joseph moved his wife and four children into the farmhouse in the vineyard and continued the art of handcrafting wine from inside the two-story stone and wood winery until he passed away in 1946.
Today, Joseph’s grandson, Jack, and his wife, Dianna, lease the vineyard and winery and continue the Varozza winemaking tradition by releasing the first wines made at the winery since the late forties. Located one mile north of downtown St. Helena, Varozza Vineyards has been home to four generations - with three of them still residing there.
Tasting Notes:
Initially a bit tight, this St. Helena wine opens slowly building layers of complexity with a strong satisfying finish. Given a chance to breathe it expresses aromas of deep dark fruits, hints of cocoa and tobacco. On the palette, the wine shows a real affinity for black fruit; plum, black cherry and blackberry most prevalent, hiding behind muscular tannins. Gives indications of being there for the long haul, guaranteeing a reward for those with the patience to allow this wine to unfold at its own pace.
