Vintage<BR>With some of the lowest yields in recent memory, 2005 will go down as one of our most demanding and successful vintages. Inclement weather in the spring resulted in poor fruit set and consequently lower yields. The small crop and perfect weather during the prime ripening zone allowed us to harvest perfectly ripe fruit packed with flavor and structure. <BR><BR>Vineyard<BR>Langley Hill is our largest plot of Estate Chardonnay. It occupies a steep hillside offering numerous exposures and soil types. It is not unheard of for us to make five passes though the 5.25 acres each harvest. Langley Hill is often the last of our Chardonnays to be picked. It’s a decidedly cool site that ripens grapes at a slower pace than neighboring vineyards. The vineyard’s lack of heat and exposure to the elements yields a Chardonnay that is steely and structured with persistent citrus and mineral flavors<BR> <BR>Winemaking<BR>We picked this block early in the morning and delivered the cold fruit directly to the press for whole-cluster pressing followed by barrel fermentation. Weekly batonage during the 16 months in French oak barrels (50% new) added flesh and texture to the brilliant spine of acidity and bright mountain fruit. We bottled the wine unfiltered to preserve the magnificent texture and delicate aromatics.<BR><BR>Tasting Notes<BR>White flowers, poached pear and quartz are evident in the fragrant nose. The mouth follows suit with additional flavors of honey, hazelnut and bailed hay. This is atypically rich for Langley Hill, but the vineyard’s cut and cool climate local keep the wine focused and bright. Aging in one-year-seasoned French oak has allowed this wine to show beautifully in its youth, but it has the stuffing and structure to evolve over the next few years.<BR></P>
