This well structured 2006
Pinot Noir from the Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Maria shows
beautiful bright aromas of Bing cherry, strawberry and pomegranate.
Its soft, elegant structure and natural, well balanced acidity
makes this a perfect food-friendly wine from a premier California
vineyard.
2006 was a good year for Pinot Noir. The growing season was one of
the longest in recent memory. An unusually warm winter created a
very early budbreak and therefore an early start for the vines.
Spring rains and mild summer temperatures slowed the vine growth
and ripening period and resulted in beautifully flavored grapes.
Very low yields ensured full ripening which brought depth of color
and bright fruit characters to the finished wine.
An original Spanish land
grant from the 1830s, the Bien Nacido Vineyard (which translates as
'well born') has become one of the most well-known vineyards in
California's Central Coast. Planted primarily to Pinot Noir,
Chardonnay, Syrah and Merlot, it is the source for some of
California's most distinguished wines. It is classified as a
maritime-influenced desert, with morning fog cover and afternoon
breezes from the nearby Pacific Ocean. The soils consist of sand,
chalk and marine loam that provide good drainage, and the climate
provides even temperatures with very little rainfall. For more
