In just its fifth vintage, the Enver Salman Vineyard Petite Sirah has become one of my most popular wines. I attribute the success of this wine to its wonderful balance between dense fruit flavor and soft supple tannins which is difficult to achieve when using a variety that is known for its muscularity and ability to stain teeth blue.
The color of the 2004 Petite Sirah is deep purple and the hues are youthful and bright. The aromas of baked ripe blueberry and cassis are complimented by a smoky, spicy oak bouquet with hints of chocolate and mocha. One might expect a wine with this color and density to be astringent and tannic, but the flavors are of sweet black fruits and dark chocolate. The wine's body is rich and full of well-rounded 'melt in your mouth' tannins. The finish is surprisingly succulent and lingers minutes after swallowing the wine.
I am often queried about how well this wine will age. My response is, "Why age it?" We go to great lengths to keep the tannins soft and supple and to smooth out any rough edges. If complexity is your goal, then a few years in the cellar will provide rewards, but if a rich red wine loaded with fruit and soft tannins is your objective grab your corkscrew, this one is ready to go!
