The 2004 Syrah from the Three Way Vineyard in Paso Robles is the first wine to receive the reserve designation since I started the winery in 1995. Grown in thin dusty soils on the Estrella River Plain, this head trained, low yielding, Syrah vineyard is lovingly tended by Steve Carter. Steve owns vineyards both in Paso Robles and New Zealand where he was a viticulturalist for Penfolds for seven years. I figure if there is anyone in California who knows how to grow Syrah it is Steve. The significance of the name Three Way is that the vineyard is a partnership Steve shares with his son Alex and daughter Roseanne.
The greatest feature of this wine and what drove me to give it a reserve designation is the rare combination of concentration and richness without sacrificing the juicy succulence of the fruit. The 2004 vintage has color that would rival that of Petite Sirah. The aromas are of cassis and plums backed by earthen mineral note that reminds me of standing in the vineyard on a midsummer evening. The bouquet delivers spicy notes of smoke, cinnamon, vanilla and clove. The strength of the wine’s core of fruit allowed for the added concentration a second year in barrel delivered. On the palate, flavors of blackberry and sweet fully ripened plums are delivered with a velvety viscosity. Despite the depth and strength of the wine, the fruit remains a vibrant and bright centerpiece. The texture is big and round yet the tannins are well integrated and provide a second dimension to the texture without adding aggressive astringency. The lengthy finish is loaded with smoky toasted oak that adds a bit of a cola character. The acidity will give the fruit life and this wine will reward the patient with additional complexity.
