The Vineyards
The 2006 Barrel 16 Pinot Noir is a wonderful expression of J's 274 acres of estate vineyards in the Russian River Valley. These precious sixteen barrels personify J's efforts to unite our vineyard's diverse microclimates with advanced site-specific winemaking techniques.
Winemaking
These grapes were hand-picked at night to preserve freshness. The fruit is then carefully hand-sorted before de-stemming into a variety of open-top and closed-top fermenters. The must is given 5 days of cold soaking before fermentation is allowed to begin. Malolactic fermentation occurred in 100% French oak barrels. Our process allows us to craft a wine that is balanced, exhibiting layered complexity of flavors and aromas.
Ageing
The wine was aged for twelve months in small French oak barrels, thirty percent of which were new. The 2006 Barrel 16 Pinot Noir was blended just prior to bottling to allow each lot to fully develop before final decisions were made, allowing the fruit to reach it's fullest expression.
Tasting Notes
J's introductory 2006 Barrel 16 Pinot Noir is a luxurious wine with a distinct complexity and a restrained balance. Opening with subtle floral aromas, the wine's bouquet is enhanced by hints of wild blackberries, rhubarb, and honeysuckle. Rich flavors of fresh strawberries, cherries, Christmas spices dominate, with a hint of chocolate and mint on the finish.
