As one of the few wineries in California who bottles Cabernet Franc as a varietal, we are very excited by its performance to date and further potential in our vineyard. There is a tendency in California for this varietal to take on herbaceous characters, which in our vineyards has been drowned out by all the luscious fruit character. The vines produce well balanced fruit bursting with cherry, raspberry and violet notes with virtually no herbaceous characters…the way Cabernet Franc should be.
The 2003 Vintage
In originally tasting the 2003 Bordeaux varieties, the 2003 Cabernet Franc was easily the most unique and identifiable. It was also the most elegant. Thus, we took great care in blending this wine, making sure the Cabernet Franc characters came first in our decisions. What we married was a dark ruby-colored wine with a classic Cab Franc palate.
The nose is brilliant with an intertwining of spice, fruit and earthy components. Subtle and complex, the spice characters range from sweet clove and nutmeg through fresh sage to crushed cumin still resting in the mortar. The tart cherry fruit base is highlighted by hints of red currant. But it is the classic floral notes of deep, late-season roses that really tie all the characters together.
Medium-bodied with an incredibly even balance, the palate has the hallmark dryness that is typically Cabernet Franc. We worked hard to find just the right blend to showcase the cranberry and cherry fruit while balancing the young tannins while still letting the spice characters shine. As a result, this sense of sage carries well into the dry lingering finish of cedar and rich loam.
Although we used all five Bordeaux varieties, there is no mistaking this wine as anything but Cabernet Franc. It is an incredibly versatile food wine, pairing well with everything from grilled chicken to gamey, spicy meats, and every red-sauced pasta in between. Forever the family favorite, don’t be afraid to age this vintage for another 5 years.
