2004 Margerum Syrah Purisma Mountain Vineyard

This is my forth vintage from Purisima Mountain. As always, this Syrah is a blend of two clones (Estrella and Tablas Clone 99), which I get from Steve Beckmen's beautiful vineyard at the north end of Ballard Canyon. There is a little knoll next to my Estrella section that looks south-east towards Solvang and it has one of the prettiest views of the Santa Ynez valley. I always take a little "stroll to the knoll" when I visit my grapes. The wine I make from here is pretty and elegant; it's my least powerful and most delicate Syrah. Very un-interventionist wine making - I rack on persistent reduction, keep the winery fricken freezing (to preserve the fruit and so I can use less SO2), and I just watch as the wine elevates itself into this wine. Also, it is aged in 50% new François Frères barrels - two of which are half barrels (very cute) and 50% in neutral barrels.

Drink 2006-2014
Blackberries, blueberries, acacia flowers, white chocolate, and subtle barrique notes characterize the aromas and flavors of the dense, opaque blue/purple-tinged 2004 Syrah Purisima Mountain Vineyard. It is pure, rich, and elegant, with a style that begs for consumption over the next 6-8 years.
