The best examples of wines made from Nebbiolo are Barolo and Barbaresco. Both wines are from the area around the town of Alba in Piemonte. While one of the world’s great red wine grapes, Nebbiolo is one of the rarest and represents only a scant 3% of the total wine production of the Piemonte region. Martin & Weyrich Winery has been growing and producing wines from Nebbiolo since 1982 and has gained a reputation as the foremost producer of Nebbiolo wines in the United States. Martin & Weyrich grows both the Lampia and Michet clones of Nebbiolo and utilizes the fermentation techniques of salasso, punching-down and delestage to obtain maximum extraction of color and flavor from each vintage. Martin & Weyrich also barrel ages the Nebbiolo for up to 1 year in a mix of new and seasoned French Oak barrels and casks. Stylistically, our Nebbiolo captures the intrinsic flavors of Italy - cherry, roses, spice, tar and truffles, combined with our own ripe, forward fruit components that have put California wines in the forefront of wine consumption.
