The 2003 growing season provided us with some fantastic raw materials, especially in Bordeaux varieties in the Santa Cruz Mountains. A warm September ensured that our cool-climate mountain fruit ripened beautifully. A key feature of many of our wines from this vintage is the fantastic structure they posses, huge mouth-filling tannins that coat the mouth and provide for a fantastically long finish. This leads us to believe that, though they are enjoyable now for their generous fruit, they will be at their peak at the end of the decade when the tannins have softened and allowed more characteristics to shine.
This vintage of Lexington was entirely sourced from the Camel Hill Vineyard above Los Gatos. John Anderson’s vineyard sits above the Lexington Reservoir perched on a complex series of hillsides, featuring various exposures and soil types. Due to the well structured lots we saw in ’03, we decided on a Merlot heavy blend as it added some needed softness to the more densely packed Cabernet Sauvignon. Our final blend also included a small amount of Cabernet Franc. ‘Franc’ does fantastically well on this site and has vivid aromatics of violets, black spice and blueberry fruit. Aged for twenty months in 40% new French and American Oak, the ’03 Lexington should be at its best over the next 2-6 years, conservatively, and could probably age 10-12 years. Only 431 cases produced.
