The 2005 Rapsodie du Soleil is a blend of classic Rhone varietals grown in Santa Barbara County, renown for high quality Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Viognier. The winemaker selected reserve blocks of our Sunstone Estate Syrah, Mourvedre and Viognier for their distinct quality and character. Premium Grenache from the Los Alamos area was selected to add additional character and complexity. All of the Lots that went into this wine were picked, fermented and aged separately until the final blend was determined.
The Syrah, Mourvedre, and Grenache were fermented individually and racked to French oak barrels for aging. The Viognier was fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged for eight months in neutral French oak barrels. The final blend was determined in April 2007 after a blind tasting of each of the varietals by vineyard lot. Some lots were selected for their densely dark fruit and tannin structure while others were selected for their youthfulness and ability to uplift the fruit characters of the wine. The final blend was assembled and racked back to barrel for an additional five months of aging before bottling in September 2007.
This wine yields a complex array of dark stone fruit, plum, strawberry, cocoa, and spice. The flavors are richly intense yet elegant, highlighting black cherry, cranberry, and raspberry and a hint of dark chocolate. The medium tannins create a satisfying, velvety texture that coats the palate and continues on through the finish.
