Sunstone 2006 Rapsodie du Soleil is produced from organically grown grapes from the Sunstone Estate Vineyards and selected premier vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley. The 2006 harvest was characterized by the warm days cooled by consistent afternoon coastal breezes that allowed the fruit in the Santa Ynez Valley to reach unequaled varietal character.
Each of the varietals were harvested, fermented and barrel aged individually. The grapes were sorted, lightly crushed, and de-stemmed before being pumped into open top fermentation tanks. After cold soaking, the grapes were inoculated with Rhone style yeast and allowed to ferment for 12 days on the skins to extract maximum color and flavor. The wines were blended in early May 2008 and racked back to barrels to mature until the wine was ready to bottle. The syrah grape is known to take its tiime to mature, so we decided to bottle late August 2008.
The 2006 Rapsodie du Soleil is known for its rich fruit forwardness, which resembles Bing cherries, tart raspberries and ripe figs. The aromas that balance these luscious fruit flavors are hints of cinnamon, roasted coffee beans, anise, black pepper, and dried strawberries. This wine would be considered a nice cellared wine, because the complexities are slow to show and a few years of bottle aging would bring out cellared wine, because the complexities are slow to show and a few years of bottle aging would bring out the true richness of this wine.
