After befriending American Tommy Randall (Robert young), tiny Chinese orphan Ching-Ching (Shirley Temple) falls asleep in Tommy's car, which soon becomes cargo on a ship bound for San Francisco! Along the way, Ching-Ching plays matchmaker to Tommy and Susan Parker (Alice Faye), who eventually marry and adopt her. But when the couple's clashing personalities lead them to divorce court, the one-time orphan must again work her magic to try to keep her new family together.

Jack Oakie, Charlotte Greenwood and George Montgomery join internationally beloved youngster Shirley Temple in her final film under her contract with her home studio of Twentieth Century Fox. Believing that it's for the good of their daughter Wendy(Temple), Joe Ballantine (Oakie) and his wife Kit (Greenwood) decide to retire their vaudeville act and move the family to a small New England town. But despite Wendy's many attempts to charm the locals, the "show folk" are given a cold shoulder. That is, until a hurricane hits the town, and because of their generosity, strength and conviction in the face of disaster, it appears that the troupers just might win over the residents in their new hometown after all.
