Tasting Notes
Roussanne (roo SAHN), as with the other white varietals of the Rhône (Viognier and Marsanne), is similar to Chardonnay in only one way – they all tend to be full of body. A tad Zaftig, one might say. Rubenesque. And this wine is no exception.
However, this wine reveals pear, honey and a hint of mango flavors in the mouth and nose that would turn your average chardonnay Verde with envy. Fermenting and aging in 100% French oak barrels and allowing complete malolactic fermentation adds to the rich and smooth mouthfeel.
Roussanne grapes are difficult to grow. They have irregular yields and tend to ripen late and unevenly. It has little resistance to rot and powdery mildew and is easily damaged by wind and drought. But one puts up with its petulance for two reasons – its heady aroma and great acidity. Look for scents of candle wax (parafin), herbal tea, citrus blossoms, honey and apricot. Often able to age for 10+ years, a good Roussanne holds the secrets of the ages in every drop.
The Winery
As with many of the wines we carry, this one is a family affair. At William James, the family is that of Jim and Robin Porter. These college sweethearts fostered a love for wine during Fresno State’s wine tasting events, and after graduation they began making wine at home in the early 90’s.
Their initial home-built production system relied heavily on kitchen gadgets like spoons and strainers, modified golf clubs. Flash forward twelve years to 2002 and we find they've won every amateur award possible. What does a hot amateur do? Turn pro, of course. Their first commercial release was the 2003 vintage.
Cheers!
