Memories of wines I've tasted and loved the past thirty-three years. It illustrates the benefits inherent in a blended wine. This wine has a deliciousness that is wonderful to behold, swallow, and enjoy." ~ Doug Margerum, Winemaker
The Wine
Grenache from Santa Ynez Valley was nothing short of stellar in 2006, and it is the key to this wine. Grenache alwways plays the lead role in a Chateauneuf du Pape blend. In the words of the Winemaker, its Grenache, Counoise, Mourvèdre and Cinsault provide aromatic, lean, bright, tight, crangrape, (crangrape is a made up word) tobacco, smoky, leather and earth which offset my bombastic, dark, black, licorice, plum, fruity tannic, bold, intensely ripe and full-bodied Syrah.
"After thinking I had the perfect blend and after actually sending the label to the printing press, I added two barrels of my premium Syrah to the 76 barrel lot, making the final blend over 50% Syrah. M5 is a Margerum blend using five grape varieties from twelve different highest quality vineyards in Santa Barbara County vineyards to make one wine.
Provenance

52% Syrah (24% Alisos Vineyard, 24% Vogelzang Vineyard, 15% Great Oak Ranch Vineyard, 20% Black Oak Vineyard, 7% Alondra de los Prados Vineyard, 7% Purisima Mountain Vineyard, and 3% Colson Canyon Vineyard)
26% Grenache (58% Zaca Mesa Vineyard, 15% Vogelzang Vineyard, 10% Purisima Mountain Vineyard, 11% Crossroads Vineyard and 5% Watch Hill Vineyard)
9% Mourvèdre (78% Zaca Mesa Vineyard and 22% Vogelzang Vineyard)
4% Counoise and (Stolpman Vineyard)
4% Cinsault (Stolpman Vineyard
Misc. - 3% Genesis of M5 (a co-fermentation of everything but Syrah), 1% ÜBER Syrah (a co-fermentation of all the Syrah), and 1% K-Ray Cuveé (don't even ask).

Only 2,200 cases produced, each with it’s own serial number on the label.

SKU: MARG-M5-06

Other products in the category All Wines (alphabetically):

Adelaida Cellars, 2004 Reserve Cabernet, Viking Estate Vineyard -- The wine that is the jewel in the portfolio of Adelaida Cellars, from Paso Robles famed West Side

Andrew Murray 06 Syrah "Tous les Jours -- Perhaps the perfect everyday wine, and a testament to the art of blending Syrah from various sources

Andrew Murray Vineyard, 2005 Syrah, Santa Ynez Valley -- A favorite selection from our Rhone blending classes.
