Vineyard Information
We have a couple of areas in our vineyard with Pinot Gris planted. This one is from a hillside site with a sandy and rocky soil, which limited yield this year to a very low 2.1 tons per acre. The clone is from Colmar, an Alsatian selection. The clusters are small-berried and make for an intense wine. Pinot Gris is a true Pinot and it is fragile and prone to problems on the vine. Luckily we did not have any such issues this year. The weather was mild and dry throughout and the vines were left in peace to gradually ripen.
Winemaking & Cellar Information
While the fruit is a beautiful light purple and gold the wine should be as white as possible. This makes gentle pressing a necessity. This wine can also be bitter and pick up undesirable color if pressed hard so we take particular care with it. The fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a cool temperature and it is aged on its yeast lees until bottling. Our goal is to make a crisp wine in an Italianate style. We are not attempting the heavy Alsatian style. It is a wonderful wine while young, but we have noticed that it improves with a year or two of bottle age as long as it is kept cool and dark.

Tasting Notes
The wine has a very pale platinum color. There is that particular and pleasing aroma that is both earthy and candied at once. It has lime and lemon notes as well as a haunting violet-like tone. There are underlying aromas of coriander and something reminiscent of pie crust. The mouth is very crisp and refreshing. It almost demands to be drunk with raw oysters.
