Down sleeping bags filled with European goose down are the best choic for extreme conditions where optimum pack size,heat retention and weight are vital.However, down is highly hygroscopic and heat retention gradually diminishes as it absorbs moisture.For extreme applications therefore,the down sleeping bag is protected by an outer bag filled with synthetic material. The outer bag protects the down bag from external moisture but also absorbs moisture given off by the body which passes through the down bag.The synthetic bag dries quickly because the filling itself does not retain moisture.The outer bag also acts as a barrier to the chill effect of the wind. The double sleeping bag system creates additional air gaps between the two sleeping bags which provide additional insulation performance.Should a soldier loose his sleeping bag in the field,he can use one of the two bags from a companion. The outer bag provides the insulation to ensure that the point of condensation of the body ‘s moisture is not inside the down-insulation but between the two bags or inside the synthetic thermal insulation area.This keeps the down-filled inner sleeping bag dry.
