A citrusy,off-dry wine inspired by the light whites of the Loire valley.James River White is a classic dinner wine, with a slightly crispand spicy finish. Serve as an aperitif, or with light fare such astrout, grilled chicken, or turkey. The inspiration for James RiverWhite came from the neighboring river. It has been suggested thatthe river reminds the traveler of the grace and elegance of theLoire valley. On both banks of the wide and majestic river,plantations dot the landscape, some of which are among the earliestland settlements and homes of American Presidents and historicalfigures. Winding roads on both sides meander through deep woods,providing a canopy of shade to the traveler.

A fruit forward Viognier with some lovely tropical notes ofpineapple, lychee and banana. Right next to the tropicalnotes are some pear, apricot, and vanilla that compliment eachother very nicely. There is a nice bright character to thewine yet the mouth feel still holds a rich creamy character thatmakes for a wonderful balance. A pineapple upside down cakein a bottle. In addition to the cake analogy I havealways thought of Viognier as being a romantic wine and thisvintage certainly has that feel to it.

This is a verybalanced wine with many nuances and subtleties. The fragrantnotes of lemon, apple, pear and pineapple are woven together withsome soft vanillas, nuts and mineral characters. The oak isharmoniously integrated into the wine which helps to create thebalance. The finish has a lot of fruit with some soft tonesgiving the wine many dimensions. This wine is dedicated to myfather who was a Burgundian wine drinker and I would like to thinkthat this wine has the same qualities.

Estate Grown Traminette 2011

The fruit notesare a medley of oranges, pears, green apple, grapefruit, banana andhoneydew melon. Behind the fruit is agentle honey and creamy vanilla tone that rounds out the manyfruits. The floral aspect of thewine is derived from some delicate orange blossoms andhoneysuckle. The wine has a full, richcreamy mouth feel that lingers for awhile. There is also just a hint ofacidity that adds to the balance and structure of the wine whichoffers a bit of citrus notes on the back palette. Given the many nuances to thiswine, it is fun to pair with foods.

Fermented in stainless steel andaged in neutral French oak barrels.

2011 makesthe second time The Williamsburg Winery has produced a dryrosé. These are fun wines that are a wonderful accompanimentto a picnic. The 2011 is showing bright strawberry,raspberry, and cherry along with a hint of apple, banana andgrapefruit. These fruit nuances are nicely balanced with thecreamy vanilla and yeast notes. When combined, there is aclassic strawberry shortcake feel to the wine, (or even a drystrawberry margarita). Behind the fruit is a quiet earthycharacter with just a bit of minerality to balance out the entirewine. This is a perfect picnic wine.

Blend: 94%Merlot, 3% Traminette, 3% Vidal Blanc

The 2011 SirChristopher Wren is a unique blend which ultimately offersunique style wine. The floral characters of the Traminttemingle among the soft fruit and earth elements of the Vidalblanc. The small amounts of chardonnay and sauvignon blancare reminiscent of a little brother and sister playing with theirolder siblings. They bring youthfulness to the wine. The floral characters are enhanced by the apricot, pear and applenotes. There are also some clean yeast and earth (orartichoke) characters of the wine that add a nice dimension. The finish of the wine is smooth, rich and a bit creamy which addslength. Overall, a unique wine that will pair well withbisques, pear and gorgonzola salad, or even something with a hintof spice.

This VirginiaChardonnay is primarily barrel-fermented and barrel-aged.Harmonious and smooth, this wine is designed to exhibit the soft,toasty character of the French oak barrels balanced with thevarietal character of the chardonnay fruit. The wine will stand upto rich foods such as grilled tuna, lobster, and game birds. Thewine is named in honor of the "12th Acte" passed by the FirstRepresentative Assembly of the New World, at Jamestown Island, in1619. The Governor and Counsel enacted laws of which the 12th readas follows: "Moreover ..., that every householder doe yearly planteand maintaine ten vines, untill they have attained to the arte andexperience of dressing a Vineyard, either by their owne industry,or by the Instruction of some Vigneron. And that upon what penaltysoever the Governour and Counsell of Estate shall thinke fitt toimpose upone the neglecters of this acte."

A crisp, drydinner wine highlighting the fruit character of Chardonnay, agedprincipally in stainless steel with a graceful hint of oak. ThisChardonnay will pair nicely with shellfish, delicate cream sauces,and grilled poultry. Named in honor of the foremost horticulturistand viticulturist of the Colonial period in America, Major JohnAdlum lived from 1759 to 1836, in Pennsylvania, Maryland, andWashington, D.C.. Major Adlum was appointed Deputy Surveyor for theCommonwealth of Pennsylvania and maintained a long-standingfriendship with one of his fellow surveyors, General GeorgeWashington. However, it was his strong interest in wine andwinemaking which gained him the most acclaim through his book onthe subject, "A Memoir on the Cultivation of the Vine in Americaand the Best Mode of Making Wine,"(Washington, D.C., 1828). He iswell known for having assisted Thomas Jefferson with hisviticultural endeavours in Virginia. It was from his estate "TheVineyard" (which is now part of Rock Creek Park in WashingtonD.C.), as well as from "Wilton Farm," his estate in Havre de Grace,Maryland that Major Adlum corresponded with Jefferson and sent himcuttings of different vines. He experimented with varying degreesof success in growing and vinifying both European varietals andnative American grapes.

The first thing that strikes me is the elegant color of thewine; reminiscent of a light pink rose, (how fitting). Theelegant color of the wine carries through in the aromas offering anabundance of strawberry, raspberry, blueberry with a bit of greenapple and citrus. The candied quality of the fruit alsooffers a bit of tropical character. These fruit tones giveway to a nice soft creamy vanilla and floral tone. Overallthe wine is wonderfully balanced and has a clean and refreshingfinish. The residual sugar and the brightness work very welltogether making this a perfect spring or summer wine. A winemade for the picnic basket. I think this will surprise the socalled, "serious wine drinkers"!
