Is there any way to have a different size/type font in the main catagory display area and the persistent catagory display area? I would like to have a visible catagory tree, but all displayed on one small, neat page, which would require a smaller font.

Choose a small font size in the category font size option of your layout section. The go to your category section, and choose to display thumbnail only. Upload thumbnails for your catogorys that contain the category name as part of the image. You can also add css elements in the Advanced Layout section for further control.
