backorder, sold out, unable to order, can't order, not orderable
Question:
How can I show something as temporarily unavailable, and make it unorderable... but still have it appear on the shopping site. I changed it's status to backorder, but that still allows someone to order the item. How can I prevent orders from being placed?

consider marking it as sold out, and using the short description line to explain the circumstance.
If you are not using the Sold Out status for any other product, you can mark this one as sold out, and change the sold out label in layout/general layout/labels, to say something like "more on the way", or "check back soon to order", or "temporarily sold out". However, if you are using the Sold Out status anywhere else, it would change the words SOLD OUT there, as well - so you can only do this if you are using the sold out status on just this one product.
